We will focus on the new TECHNOLAS Excimer Workstation 217P and its new features, and also review a few of Technolas' premium procedures.

Review of Technolas Perfect Vision at the ESCRS 2009 Congress

The XXVII Congress of the ESCRS that took place in Barcelona in September 2009, introduced Technolas Perfect Vision (TPV) as the new key player in the refractive surgery market, especially in the field of presbyopia correction. Technolas Perfect Vision’s activities were very successful, capturing the visitor’s attention. The company’s booth was one of the busiest, and while all products were of interest the highlight was the TECHNOLAS® Femtosecond Workstation 520F. More than 250 doctors registered to try the TECHNOLAS refractive platform which combines the TECHNOLAS Femtosecond Workstation 520F and the TECHNOLAS Excimer Workstation 217P.

Technolas Perfect Vision Symposium

The Technolas Perfect Vision Lunchtime Symposium (TPV Symposium) focused on presbyopia correction with both the TECHNOLAS Femtosecond and Excimer Workstations. ZYOPTIX
® Personalized Treatment Advanced (PTA) results, the ultimate algorithm to treat myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia, thus correcting HOA without inducing spherical aberration, were also reviewed. The symposium was attended by more than 400 people.

Dr. Mike Holzer from the Universitäts-Augenklinik in Heidelberg showed the positive results he obtained with INTRACOR™, the first flapless intrastromal presbyopia correction performed with the TECHNOLAS Femtosecond Workstation 520F. He concluded that almost 100% of his patients were satisfied with the visual outcomes of the procedure.
Dr. Jorge Castanera, from the Instituto Oftalmológico Castanera in Barcelona revealed his outcomes with the new ZYOPTIX
® excimer laser algorithm for presbyopia correction, PresbyLasik. He reported promising results in the ongoing study to achieve the CE Mark.
The symposium moderator, Dr. Stephen Slade from the Slade & Baker Vision Center in Houston, Texas, said that presbyopia correction was a key element for the future of refractive surgery because “presbyopia correction will keep the patients in practice over time”.
Dr Erik Mertens from the Antwerp Eye-Center in Belgium presented his results with ZYOPTIX Personalized Treatment Advanced (PTA), stating that it was by far the most sophisticated algorithm available today. Technolas Perfect Vision’s presence in the Congress was reinforced by the presentation of more than 20 free papers and posters.

The new TECHNOLAS® Excimer Workstation 217P

The new TECHNOLAS Excimer Workstation 217P launched at the ESCRS Congress, incorporates innovative features for ease of use, time saving, increased accuracy and enhanced performance. The 217P offers your patients premium procedures such as ZYOPTIX Personalized Treatment Advanced (PTA) or ZYOPTIX® Tissue Saving for hyperopia. One of the benefits of these combined features is the reduction in the retreatment rate to less than 1%. This ultimately means an increase in profitability of your refractive practice.

Advanced patient intra-operative data and ergonomic design for improved workflow
The new Slit lamp provides excellent visualisation without moving the patient from the laser bed.
This contributes to the improvement of patient flow at surgery. The optional Optical Coherence Pachymetry (OCP) is a gold standard in contact free pachymetry that provides continuous high-resolution readings throughout surgery.

Ergonomically designed to work in conjunction with the TECHNOLAS Femtosecond Workstation 520F, the new patient bed improves workflow for both LASIK and INTRACOR™ procedures. There is also the option to incorporate a new heated mattress that allows for easier surgery and enhanced patient comfort during surgery. The automatic headrest optimises the patient’s head positioning. With these new features and design, the TECHNOLAS Excimer Workstation 217P increases the comfort of both doctor and patient, improving workflow and patient satisfaction. More importantly, the use of one single procedure card for all ZYOPTIX® treatment modes saves up to 20% in procedure time.

ACE™ Technology and Iris Recognition – Enhanced accuracy for improved patient safety
The Advanced Control Eyetracking (ACE™) Technology is a dynamic rotational eyetracking system that tracks and simultaneously adjusts the ablation pattern for the entire duration of the procedure. More importantly, ACE™ Technology enables Iris Recognition for all ZYOPTIX modes. ACE™ compensates for the following types of eye movements: dynamic rotational movement, static cyclotorsion, pupil shift compensation, active X and Y planes, saccadic eye movements and movement along the Z plane.

ZYOPTIX® Personalized Treatment Advanced (PTA) - Premium quality of vision
ZYOPTIX Personalized Treatment Advanced (PTA) - our best algorithm ever developed - is a new algorithm that treats higher-order aberrations (HOAs) without inducing spherical aberration. PTA combines an aspheric module to compensate for induced spherical aberration, with a wavefront module for treating pre-existing HOAs. PTA provides the best visual outcomes using the Advanced Nomogram, which dramatically reduces the retreatment rate down to less than 1%.
PTA treats myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism using the Advanced Nomogram, which is now also available for customised hyperopia procedures. Offering PTA treatment to your patients is offering them the best visual acuity available today.

ZYOPTIX® PresbyLasik
The TECHNOLAS Excimer Workstation 217P is ready for presbyopia correction thanks to the newly developed algorithm PresbyLasik*. PresbyLasik is a binocular procedure that will give your patients the quality of life they are looking for. By moving into the expanding sector of presbyopia correction with PresbyLasik, gives you the opportunity to increase your business and profitability. The results of the ongoing multicentre European study to obtain the CE Mark are very promising.

ZYOPTIX® Tissue Saving for hyperopia treatment allows the surgeon to safely increase the range of patients who can be treated. Tissue Saving, originally developed to treat myopia, is now also available for the treatment of hyperopia.

ZYOPTIX® Aspheric reduces the induction of spherical aberration. The Aspheric algorithm preserves the natural aspheric shape of the cornea, resulting in better visual performance for patients, especially at night.

INTRACOR™
With INTRACOR, Technolas Perfect Vision offers a femtosecond laser procedure with enhanced capabilities. INTRACOR is the technique that provides flapless intrastromal correction to reshape the cornea using the TECHNOLAS Femtosecond Workstation 520F.
